You can picture ear as the organ on the side of your head that catches sound. Almost everything the word does grows from that one picture: because the ear is how we take in what's said, it stands in for listening, attention, being trusted to hear someone out, and a knack for catching musical or spoken sounds. (One separate sense — the ear of corn — is a different old word that just happens to share the spelling.)
