audience with a leader · noun · B1
A formal meeting in which you are allowed to talk with a very important person, such as a king or a religious leader.
You can picture audience as the rows of people sitting and listening while someone performs or speaks up front: a body of receivers, all turned toward one source, taking in what it gives out. The root idea is hearing — people gathered to receive. From that, it stretches to scattered receivers (a TV audience) and to being granted a hearing with someone powerful.
From Latin 'audientia' (a hearing, listening), from 'audire' (to hear). The shared thread under all senses is receiving by hearing — a gathering of hearers.
