One way to picture this verb: sound reaches your ears and you take it in — you don't have to try, it just arrives. From that base, 'hear' stretches two short steps: from catching sound, to catching the news or words that sound carries (you 'hear' that something happened), and then into a cluster of fixed spoken phrases that lean on 'do you hear it / did you hear that'.
