刺眼的強光
核心畫面本身,也是這個字歷史上比較老的一支:光強到讓眼睛不舒服。動詞說的是光在發,名詞說的是那道光本身。
glare, verb, blinding light · verb · C2
To shine with a very strong bright light which hurts your eyes.
發強光
One way to picture it: light so strong and steady that it pushes back at your eyes — you cannot look at it comfortably, and you cannot ignore it either.
Middle English glaren belongs to a Germanic family of "shine brightly, glisten" words (Low German glaren "to shine brightly, glow"). The light meaning is the older one; the angry stare is English borrowing that hard shine for a pair of eyes.
中古英文 glaren 屬於日耳曼語系一整群「發亮、閃耀」的字,例如低地德語 glaren(強烈發光、燒得發紅)。也就是說,「光」這一支是比較老的,「怒視」是後來把那種硬邦邦的強光借到人的眼睛上——這也解釋了為什麼英文裡瞪人跟刺眼的光會共用一個字。
Middle English glaren ← Old English *glærian ← Proto-West Germanic *glarōn; cognate with Low German glaren ("to shine brightly, glow"); attested origin supplied with the payload

把強光的畫面搬到眼睛上:眼神也可以又強又不移開,讓被看的人不舒服。中文說「目光如炬」用的是同一個直覺,所以這一支對中文讀者其實不難接上。
