Middle English glaren belongs to a Germanic family of "shine brightly, glisten" words (Low German glaren "to shine brightly, glow"). The light meaning is the older one; the angry stare is English borrowing that hard shine for a pair of eyes.
中古英文 glaren 屬於日耳曼語系一整群「發亮、閃耀」的字，例如低地德語 glaren（強烈發光、燒得發紅）。也就是說，「光」這一支是比較老的，「怒視」是後來把那種硬邦邦的強光借到人的眼睛上——這也解釋了為什麼英文裡瞪人跟刺眼的光會共用一個字。
