Scrutiny is careful, thorough examination — the noun for that close looking. A budget, a plan, or a public person can come under scrutiny, which means people are going through it in detail, often because something might be wrong or because the public has a right to know. News and government language love this word; everyday chat uses it less, unless someone is being a bit dramatic. It is usually uncountable: you give something scrutiny, or it faces scrutiny. You will sometimes see a scrutiny of the accounts, but “many scrutinies” is not how people talk. The feeling is not a friendly glance. It is a search.
組成From Middle English scrutiny, from Medieval Latin scrūtinium (a search, an inquiry). That comes from a Latin verb meaning to search or examine thoroughly, itself from Late Latin scrūta (rubbish, broken trash) — the old picture is rummaging through broken bits — going back further to a root meaning “to cut.”
