You can picture 'look' as the act of aiming your eyes — deliberately turning your gaze toward something so it lands in your sight. It is not the passive 'seeing' that just happens; it is you pointing your attention through your eyes. Almost every other meaning is this one act stretched in a new direction: aiming the eyes to find, to judge, to warn — or turning the picture around so it becomes how a thing appears when other people aim THEIR eyes at it.
