To glower is to look at someone in a dark, angry way — a heavy stare, often with the brows down, and usually without words. It is stronger and slower than a quick cross look, and a little more than everyday , though the two sit close. You can glower at a person, or sit glowering in a corner. There is also a noun: a glower is that angry look itself. Say it to rhyme with power and flower (GLOW-uh, with the ow of now), not as glow + -er, 'a person who shines'. That mix-up is easy because of the spelling, but this word is about the face, not about light.

組成From an older form, possibly Scots, of glore, from Middle English glōren / glouren, 'to gleam; to glare, glower'; or from an old verb glow, 'to stare'. It goes back to a Scandinavian language. On the surface it looks like glow + -er, but that glow is the old 'stare' verb, not the everyday word for shining. Distant cousins include Low German and Dutch gloren and Icelandic glóra.
