沒了、過時
這一組把「這種鳥一隻都不剩」的結局,搬到東西和人身上。重點不是死亡本身,而是「回不來了」。所以用在停用的機器、沒人管的規定,或是停在舊時代的人身上,聽的人馬上懂。
noun · C1
Used to say that something is completely finished: it no longer works, no longer happens, or is no longer used by anyone.
早就沒戲了、完全過時
You can think of the dodo as the bird everyone knows is gone. It was heavy, it could not fly, it lived on one island, and then there were none left — only bones and a few old drawings. That picture is unusually complete, so English keeps borrowing it. When a plan or a rule or a machine is finished for good, it is dead as a dodo. When a person or a company stays in the old world while everyone else moves, they are a dodo. And because the bird was slow on its feet and unafraid of people, an American speaker can call someone a dodo for being slow to catch on.
Wiktionary records the origin as uncertain: perhaps from obsolete Portuguese doudo (fool, simpleton) or from Dutch dodaars, first attested in the 17th century. If the Portuguese story is right, the idea of a fool was in the name before the bird ever became a byword for being gone.
Wiktionary 記載 dodo 的來源不確定:一說來自已廢用的葡萄牙文 doudo(傻瓜、笨),一說來自荷蘭文 dodaars,十七世紀開始有紀錄。如果是前者,「笨」這個意思在這個名字裡本來就有,比後來「絕種」的比喻更早;但這條線索本身沒有定論,只能當作參考。
Wiktionary, entry 'dodo' (etymology 1), packet evidence kaikki:3f6f69a190036ae4:164823813; the source itself marks the etymology as uncertain.

笨、反應慢
這一支抓的是鳥的樣子,不是牠的結局:動作慢、不會飛、看到人也不躲,看起來就像沒反應過來。另外若 Wiktionary 那條葡萄牙文 doudo(傻瓜)的說法成立,「笨」可能本來就在這個名字裡。

A large bird with a heavy body and a big hooked beak that could not fly. It lived only on one island in the Indian Ocean and died out in the 1600s, so there are none alive anywhere today.
