Flightless means not able to fly. We say it about birds — and a few other animals — whose bodies do not take them into the air: penguins, ostriches, kiwis. They may still have wings, but those wings do not lift them off the ground. The word is a calm science word, not an insult. A flightless bird is not a broken bird; many of them run, swim, or kick extremely well. Though actually, this is about an animal’s body. It is not a plane that stays on the ground, and it is not a person who is afraid of flying. Those are different ideas. You will meet flightless in nature films and school science more than in daily chat.
