A trendsetter is a person — sometimes a company, a city, or a magazine — who does something new first, and then other people copy it, so it becomes a fashion. The key idea is being early and being followed. Someone who simply dresses well is not a trendsetter; someone whose choices other people start imitating is. You hear it most about clothes, music, food and design, but it stretches easily to business and technology: a phone company can be a trendsetter, a school can be a trendsetter in how it teaches. It is a positive word almost every time — it says you are original and influential.
