Not existing anymore, or not useful anymore. A defunct factory is not “broken today”; it is closed for good. Companies, clubs, laws, brands, and websites are the usual subjects. Of people it can mean dead, but that use is old, and it can sound cold or even , so be careful. Formal, a little — newspapers like it. There is an old verb as well, from the same Latin, meaning to die or to come to an end — though actually almost nobody uses the verb now; the adjective is the living word. It often means “dead as an organization” more than “broken as a tool”: for a that will not start, “out of order” is more everyday.
