extinct volcano · adjective · C1
Used about a volcano that does not erupt any more.
One way to picture it: a fire that has gone out. Nothing is burning any more — and once the last flame is gone, it does not come back on its own.
From Latin ex(s)tinctus, past participle of ex(s)tinguere "to put out, quench" — the same root as extinguish; the modern senses all sit on the image of a fire put out.
Latin extīnctus/exstīnctus, perfect passive participle of extinguō/exstinguō (as given in the entry's origin note)
