One picture carries the whole word: a wide flat blade moving forward low to the ground. It does not lift, it does not pick things apart, and it does not stop to look. Whatever is in front of it gives way. If what is in front is loose earth, the earth moves. If it is a house, the house comes down. If it is a crowd, people are pushed aside. If it is a person's decision, or an idea somebody just offered, that gives way too. So the question the word always answers is the same one: what was in front of the blade?

From the word’s history

From an earlier word bulldose, literally a bull-dose, a dose fit for a bull: a force far bigger than the thing it is aimed at. The machine was named from the word, not the other way round.

來自更早的 bulldose:bull(公牛)加 dose(一劑),字面是「給公牛的一劑」——遠遠超過需要的力道。也就是說,這個字先有,推土機 bulldozer 才是照著它命名的。
