You can picture push as your hand pressing against something to move it away from you — a hand on a door, a shoulder against a stuck car, a finger on a button. That one bodily action is the seed of the whole word. From pressing a physical thing away, it stretches: to pressing a button, to pressing your body through a crowd, and then — leaving the body behind — to pressing on people (urging, persuading), pressing on situations (driving change up or down), and pressing on yourself (taking a risk too far). The noun is the same picture frozen into a single shove, a campaign, or a moment when the pressing becomes .
