You can picture it first as one physical object: pages bound together inside a cover. That single thing splits two ways. As a noun, the picture stays an object — the bound thing itself (a story to read, a notebook to write in, a of accounts) and the many that treat 'the book' as the place where things are written down and recorded. As a verb, the picture shifts: long ago you reserved a room or a seat by writing the customer's name into a register — 'to book' is to enter a name in a book — so today it means to reserve in advance, and also what the police or a referee do when they write your name down for doing wrong.
