One way to picture this word: you take something — a seat, some food, your energy, your opinion — and you hold it back from being used right now, setting it apart so it stays available for a later moment or a particular purpose. That single act, 'keep it set aside for later', is the engine. As a verb it's the holding-back itself (reserving a table, saving some sauce, keeping the right to act). As a noun it's the stuff held back (a supply in store), or a person or force kept on standby (a substitute, a backup team), or a piece of land set apart and protected — and, turned inward, the quiet way a person holds their own feelings back.
