If someone is bookish, they would rather sit with a book than run, play a sport, or go out. Reading and studying pull them more than the loud, physical things other people do. People sometimes say it kindly: this person lives in stories and ideas. They also sometimes say it with a small smile, as if the person is a bit awkward in everyday rooms, or does not know how to talk about ordinary things. It is about what you love doing, not a clean word for “clever” — a bookish student may be bright, but the word is pointing at the books, not the marks. Though actually, it is not only about people. We also call words or writing bookish when they sound like a page, not like a conversation: stiff, old, or too careful. The people-sense is the one you will hear first. Ordinary English; a little judging, depending on the voice.
組成book + -ish. From the noun book plus the old ending -ish, “like” or “in the manner of” — here, like someone who lives with books.
