From Old French arester "to stay, stop", from Vulgar Latin arrestare, from ad- "to" + restare "to stop, remain behind" (re- + stare "to stand"). The figurative "catch and hold the attention" sense is recorded from 1814.
來自古法文 arester「停下、留住」，源頭是通俗拉丁文 arrestare，由 ad-「向」加上 restare「停住、留在後面」構成（re- 加 stare「站」）。所以這個字的底層意思是「讓它站住不動」，而「吸引住目光」這個引申用法是 1814 年才記錄到的。知道這一層，就能看出逮捕、遏止、吸引三個意思其實是同一個動作。
