The root picture you can hold for 'bar' is a single long, straight, rigid piece — a rod or strip of metal or wood, longer than it is wide. Almost the whole word grows out of this one shape. The rigid piece can stay a literal object (a metal bar, a bar of chocolate, the bar across a goal, the bars of a prison window); laid down to block a way, the same piece becomes a barrier, and from 'putting a bar in the way' come the verb (to bar / block) and the preposition (bar = leaving one thing out, i.e. barring it). One special branch: the long counter you drink at was called a 'bar' (the barrier between customer and bottles), and the whole drinking place took its name from that counter. A faint visual cousin is any narrow straight strip — a band of light, a stripe on a uniform, a glowing heater element, a on a screen.
