A toolbar is the strip of small buttons and icons in a computer program, usually across the top of the window, that you click to do things — save, print, make text bold, change the colour, undo. The idea is that your common jobs sit out in the open where one click reaches them, instead of being hidden inside menus. Every program has its own set, and most let you add or remove buttons so the bar holds the tools you actually use.
A toolbarToolbar is指的是 the strip of small buttons and icons in a computer program電腦程式裡一排小按鈕和圖示, usually across the top of the window通常橫在視窗上方, that you click to do things你點下去就能做事 — save, print, make text bold, change the colour, undo存檔、列印、把文字變粗體、改顏色、復原之類的。The idea is that your common jobs sit out in the open where one click reaches them這樣設計的用意是讓你常用的功能都攤在外面、一點就到, instead of being hidden inside menus而不是藏在選單裡。Every program has its own set每個程式都有自己的一套, and most let you add or remove buttons而且大多數都讓你增減按鈕 so the bar holds the tools you actually use讓這排工具列上放的是你真正會用到的工具。
The word spreads a bit wider than that. In a web browser, the toolbar is the row along the top with the back arrow, the address box and your extensions; a program you install may add its own toolbar to your browser, and this kind — the unwanted browser toolbar that arrives with free software — has such a bad reputation that 'toolbar' by itself can sound like a warning.
The word spreads a bit wider than that這個字的用法還再擴大一點。In a web browser在網頁瀏覽器裡, the toolbar is the row along the top with the back arrow, the address box and your extensions toolbar 指的是上方那一排,有上一頁箭頭、網址列、還有你的擴充功能;a program you install may add its own toolbar to your browser你安裝的某個程式可能會把自己的工具列加進你的瀏覽器裡, and this kind而這一種 — the unwanted browser toolbar that arrives with free software也就是隨免費軟體一起裝進來、沒人想要的瀏覽器工具列 — has such a bad reputation名聲差到 that 'toolbar' by itself can sound like a warning光是 toolbar 這個字單獨出現就像個警訊。
On a phone or tablet the same row of buttons is usually called a toolbar too, though it often sits at the bottom of the screen instead of the top.
On a phone or tablet在手機或平板上 the same row of buttons is usually called a toolbar too同樣一排按鈕通常也叫做 toolbar, though it often sits at the bottom of the screen instead of the top只是它常常在螢幕下方,而不是上方。
Related words are worth keeping apart: a menu bar holds words you click to open lists, a status bar at the bottom reports information rather than taking clicks, and a sidebar runs down the side of the window.
Related words are worth keeping apart有幾個相關的字值得分清楚:a menu bar holds words you click to open lists menu bar「選單列」放的是你點了會打開清單的文字, a status bar at the bottom reports information rather than taking clicks底部的 status bar「狀態列」是回報資訊而不是給你點的, and a sidebar runs down the side of the window而 sidebar「側邊欄」則是沿著視窗側邊延伸下去。
組成tool + bar. A bar in the computer sense is a long thin strip on the screen, and this one holds your tools. The same 'bar' turns up in menu bar, status bar, scroll bar and progress bar.
