One way to hold this word: a short sideways push that takes something off the main line and puts it on another one. The clearest place to see it is a rail yard. A small engine comes up behind a carriage, pushes it a little way, and the carriage is now on a different track. Nothing travelled far. Nothing moved itself. And the new line is a side line, not the main one. Every other use of the word is that same short push with something else in the carriage's place: a person, a plan, a current, a stream of blood, or a car that did not want to be touched.

The packet traces the word to Middle English schonten, schunten, 'to jerk, swerve; to dodge, escape', with two possible routes behind it: a back-formation from schonen (Old English scunian, the ancestor of shun), or an altered form of an Old English word meaning 'to hasten, hurry'. The source marks both routes as uncertain, and a jerk or a swerve is exactly the sudden sideways move the modern word still describes.
