核心畫面

One way to hold this word: a short sideways push that takes something off the main line and puts it on another one. The clearest place to see it is a rail yard. A small engine comes up behind a carriage, pushes it a little way, and the carriage is now on a different track. Nothing travelled far. Nothing moved itself. And the new line is a side line, not the main one. Every other use of the word is that same short push with something else in the carriage's place: a person, a plan, a current, a stream of blood, or a car that did not want to be touched.

From the word’s history

The packet traces the word to Middle English schonten, schunten, 'to jerk, swerve; to dodge, escape', with two possible routes behind it: a back-formation from schonen (Old English scunian, the ancestor of shun), or an altered form of an Old English word meaning 'to hasten, hurry'. The source marks both routes as uncertain, and a jerk or a swerve is exactly the sudden sideways move the modern word still describes.

依證據包所附的字源,這個字可以追到中古英文 schonten / schunten,意思是「猛然一動、閃開、躲掉」。再往前有兩條可能的路:一條是從 schonen(古英文 sċunian,也就是 shun 的祖先)倒推出來,另一條是古英文「趕快、催促」那個字的變形。來源本身就把這兩條標成不確定,所以只能當線索看。不過無論哪一條,「猛然偏一下」都正好對上今天這個字的畫面:短、突然、往旁邊。

Four branches

火車換軌:推上另一條線

這一組就是核心畫面本身,沒有比喻的成分。把這兩個意思先讀熟,後面幾組都會變得好懂,因為它們只是把車廂換成別的東西。

verb · C1

To move a train, or one or more railway carriages, from one track to another, or to push them into a new position in a rail yard.

(火車)調車、換軌

就是一推:碰一下,位置就變了

把車廂拿掉,只留下那一推,就是這一組。距離短、來得突然、被推的那一方沒準備——這三點跟調車場完全一樣,只是換到日常場景裡。

verb · C1

To push or knock something so that it moves suddenly, usually a short distance and usually sideways.

推一下、撞開

把人或事推到旁邊那條線

車廂換成了人、計畫或議題。硬體的支線變成了組織裡的邊緣位置,但「被別人推、沒得選、新位置比較次要」這三點一個都沒少,所以這個字聽起來才會帶著不公平的味道。

verb · C1

To move someone or something to a different place, job or position, especially one that matters less, and usually without letting them choose.

被調到邊緣位置

讓流動改走另一條路(電流、體液)

這一組把「換軌」用在會流動的東西上。多開一條路,讓電流或血液走那邊,原本那條就輕鬆了。跟前面幾組的差別是:這裡沒有東西被擋住,只是改道;而且這條新路常常是刻意做出來的。

verb · C2

To send electricity, blood or another fluid along a different path, usually by opening or adding a second route for it to take.

分流、導向另一路
