The supplied Wiktionary entry derives manoeuvre from Medieval Latin manuopera, 'work done by hand', from manu ('by hand') plus operari ('to work'), reaching English through Old French manovre and Middle French manoeuvre. Its first recorded use, in the Capitularies of Charlemagne, meant a chore or manual task. Hand-work is still what the modern word is about: something done with the hands, closely, with judgement rather than strength.
