The words are not their own — a poem learned by heart, a lesson, a list — and they come out one after another, in the order they were fixed. Both halves of that picture do work in the word: 'said aloud for listeners' gives the poem on the school stage, and 'one item after another, in fixed order' gives the long flat account of everything that happened.

Borrowed from Middle French récitation, from Latin recitatio; in English it is recite + -ation, so the action under the word has always been 'saying words out loud'.
