核心畫面

Picture a small group sitting around one narrow subject, close enough that everyone is expected to speak. Nobody is there to be talked at for an hour — people come with something half-formed and work on it together. Small room, few people, one topic: that is what separates a `seminar` from a `lecture`.

From the word’s history

Seminar entered English in 1887 from German Seminar, 'a group of students working with a professor', and behind that is Latin seminarium — literally a plant nursery, a seed plot, and figuratively a breeding ground. The image fits the format: a seminar does not hand you the finished plant, it is a small bed where half-grown ideas get put in the ground and worked on.

seminar 1887 年從德文 Seminar(「跟著教授一起做研究的一群學生」)進入英文,再往上是拉丁文 seminarium,字面是「苗圃、育苗的地方」,引申為「培育的溫床」。這個來源跟它的形式很合:seminar 不是把長好的成品交給你,而是一塊小苗圃——大家把還沒成形的想法帶來,種下去,一起把它養大。

Online Etymology Dictionary (etymonline.com), entry 'seminar': 1887, from German Seminar, from Latin seminarium 'plant nursery, seed plot', figuratively 'breeding ground'; the 'meeting for discussion' sense by 1944 in American English.
