One picture holds this word together: the only light in the yard is the moon. It is bright enough to work by, so things can be done at night with no lamp and no witness. And it is light you cannot hold — it falls on everything and leaves nothing in your hand.

From the word’s history

Middle English mone schyne, that is moon + shine. The drink is said to be named this way because it could be made at night without artificial light.
