Picture two who go together as a pair — side by side, doing the same thing, sharing the same boat or the same nest. At heart mate is 'the one alongside you.' That partner can be a friend you knock around with, the animal you breed with, or the worker who stands next to you on the job. (One small family — the chess 'mate' — comes from a different, unrelated root and only sounds the same.)
