Picture yourself stopping at something and holding it still for a moment so you can look it over — does it line up with how it should be? That one move splits two ways: you stop to LOOK (examine, verify, tick off as correct), and you stop to HOLD BACK (rein in, restrain, keep a force from running loose). From the second idea grows the chess 'check' (the king is held in danger) and from the act of stopping-to-mark grows the tick (✓). A separate branch — handing your bag over a counter and getting a token, the restaurant bill, the bank , the 'check' pattern — gathers around the same word.
