    正式A husband or wife — the person someone is married to, especially in formal or official language.

    「spouse」是正式場合裡說「丈夫或妻子」的中性詞——表格、公司規則、法律／保險文件常用。husband 專指先生、wife 專指太太；spouse 兩個都可以，不先說性別。partner 範圍更大，可能還沒結婚；spouse 則帶有「已經結婚」的正式感覺。一種想法是：spouse 像表格上的空格，用來寫「結婚的另一半」，所以聽起來比較正式。

Think of the line on an official form that just says 'Spouse: ______'. The form does not want to know whether the person is a husband or a wife — it only needs to know that one legal marriage partner exists. That is the whole feel of the word: the marriage seen from the paperwork side, cool and neutral, rather than from the living-room side.
