sudden arrival · noun · B1
The sudden or unexpected arrival of someone or something.
You can picture appearance around one motion: something coming into view — moving from 'not seen' to 'seen'. From that single picture two branches grow: (1) the act of coming into view — arriving, showing up, starting to exist, taking part in a public event; and (2) what meets the eye once it is in view — how a thing looks, the surface it shows, sometimes a surface put on for show. Both branches are the same root verb 'appear' frozen into a noun.
From Latin 'apparere' to come into sight, become visible (ad- 'to' + parere 'come forth, be visible'). Both branches — the act of showing up, and the look a thing presents once visible — sit directly on 'coming into view'.
