Made in the biggest size that this kind of thing is sold in, or much bigger than the normal size. It is used most for beds and bedding, and for large packs of food and drink.

Think of the size list on a shop label: single, double, queen, and then one more box at the end. King-size is that last box, the top of the range and bigger than you normally need. Once you can see that box, the second use follows easily: when a headache or an appetite is far past normal, English drops it into the same top box.
