    Mega is an informal word meaning very big, and often impressive or really enjoyable. A mega concert is huge and . A mega house is enormous. You can also put it in front of an adjective — mega famous, mega rich — to mean 'extremely'.

    It comes from the prefix mega-, which in science and computers has a strict job: one million (a , a ). In casual speech people used mega as a word on its own. That casual use is especially British, and it was very fashionable in late twentieth-century pop talk. You still hear it, but in careful writing it can sound like slang or advertising.

    So: in science, mega- is a number. In chat, mega is a feeling — huge, or brilliant.
