From Latin inserere, in- 'in' plus serere 'to join together, put in a row'; its past participle insertus gives the English verb, first recorded in the 1520s. The noun is much younger — 1893 — and its first use was for a paper placed among the pages of a newspaper or magazine.
來自拉丁文 inserere：in-（進去）加上 serere（接起來、排成一列），過去分詞 insertus 進入英文成為動詞，1520 年代開始有紀錄。名詞晚得多，1893 年才出現，而且一出現講的就是「夾在報紙雜誌書頁之間的那張紙」——今天的插頁義，正好就是這個字名詞用法的起點。

名詞：被放進去的那一片
動作做完以後，「被放進去的那個東西」自己得到一個名字。所以名詞的 insert 一定是後來加進去、原本不在裡面的那一片，而且形狀通常剛好合那個空間。
