Picture a word on a screen or page, and then it is wiped away — you press a key and the letters vanish, leaving a clean, empty space where they used to be. Nothing is torn or thrown out; it is simply erased, gone from sight.

From the word’s history

From Latin delere 'to wipe out, blot out, efface', linked to delinere 'to smear over' — originally smudging away the wax letters on a writing tablet. That old picture of smearing writing off a surface is exactly today's core: making written marks disappear.
