Picture a defined spot — a patch of the world with an edge around it, a slot that something or someone can sit in. From that one picture everything grows: a spot in a town or a room (the noun), the slot you reach in a book or a race, the standing you hold in society, an empty slot waiting to be filled, and then the verb — the act of setting something carefully into its slot.
