One way to hold it: the thing sitting there that could hurt someone. A wet floor, a loose wire, a bend you cannot see round — nothing has gone wrong yet, but the possibility is built in. From that idea of a live possibility, the verb takes on chance too: you put out a guess, or you put something valuable at risk.
