Picture someone putting themselves behind an outcome: whatever happens, they will cover it. That backing is the picture inside guarantee. Put it behind a statement and it becomes a firm promise; behind a product and it becomes a warranty; behind someone else's debt and it becomes standing surety; take the person away entirely and the word can just mean one thing makes another certain.
