You can picture know as a fact already sitting inside your head — not something you are working out right now, but something you already hold and can reach for. Around this simple centre, English lets the same word stretch from 'I have this fact' to 'I'm sure', to 'I'm familiar with this person/place', to 'I'm skilled at this', and finally into dozens of spoken phrases (you know, I don't know, who knows) that are really just this same 'having it / not having it in my head' turned into everyday talk.
