You can think of suppose as setting something down in your mind as 'probably true', without checking it. You don't know it for sure; you just lay it on the table and let yourself, and your plans, lean on it. From that one move — treating something as likely-true and going from there — grow all the softer everyday uses: the 'I suppose so', the reluctant agreement, the polite hint, the 'what if we...' and the 'you're supposed to...'.
