You can picture something locked down so nothing can get at it or get loose: a building bolted shut, a rope tied tight, a future nailed down. The thing is held firmly in place and shielded from harm or loss. From that one feeling — held tight, safe from being taken or shaken — come both the action (to / make safe / get and hold) and the inner feeling (calm, not worried it will slip away).
