It's a stronger, more formal and literary word than just 'danger' — you'll meet it in news headlines ('lives in peril'), warning signs, legal writing, or dramatic storytelling, but people rarely say 'peril' out loud in casual conversation. There's also the phrase 'at your peril', which is a warning meaning 'if you do this, something bad may happen to you, and it's your own fault' — 'ignore this warning at your peril.'
