You can picture hard as a stone or a block of wood: press it and it does not give way — it resists you. Everything else grows from that one feeling of resistance. When the thing pushing back is an object, hard means firm and stiff; when it pushes back against your effort or your mind, it means difficult; when a person pushes back without , it means cold or strict; when force is what meets the resistance, it means with full strength.
