- 1
Diligently means “in a diligent way”: you work hard, carefully, and thoroughly. It rides with a verb — study diligently, search diligently, check the figures diligently. It praises the manner of the work, not the talent. It is a little formal, the kind of word a teacher in a comment. In speech, people often just say carefully or hard. Use this one when you want that extra note of “they did not rush and they did not leave gaps.”
