Picture someone back from a handful of cases they happen to have seen — three slow buses, two rude waiters — and then drawing one wide line around everybody: 'The buses here are always late.' The sentence covers far more ground than the cases it was built from, and that extra ground is exactly where it may fail. That move can be held as the picture inside the word: a few points stretched into a statement about the whole group. The word can name the stretched statement itself, or the act of stretching.
