One way to hold it: standing back far enough that the details drop out of sight. From there you can only describe the shape of the whole — which is why the same word covers three things at once: looking at the whole rather than the parts, something true across most people, and something true most of the time. In every case the small exceptions are still down there; you have just back from them.
