Reasoning is the work your mind does when it thinks carefully, step by step, so it can judge something. It is the path from “I notice this” to “so I think that.” A detective uses reasoning to work out what happened. A student uses reasoning to choose an answer. Though actually, reason and reasoning sit close together, and that is where people slip. Reason can mean a cause (“the reason I’m late”) or the power to think. Reasoning is more the process itself — the chain of thoughts. Teachers often praise good reasoning even when the last answer is not perfect, because they can still see the thinking. People also talk about kinds of reasoning, such as starting from a general rule or starting from many small facts. The word is a little formal, but not rare; you will hear it in class, in science, and in arguments.
