A generalist is a person who knows about many different things and can do many of them well enough — not a person who goes very deep into only one. Companies like generalists who can move between jobs; schools and often need them too. The usual pair is generalist and specialist. A specialist knows one corner in great detail. Though actually, a good generalist is not ‘a person who knows nothing much’. The word is a compliment when the work needs a wide view, and a warning when the work needs a deep expert. In medicine, a generalist is close to a family doctor, who sees many kinds of illness; that is not the same as a heart doctor. The ending -ist names the person, as in artist or scientist.
組成From general + -ist (a person who does or is that thing). The -ist piece comes from Greek, the same ending you meet in specialist.
