It may have got up there by itself, like an insect, or it may have been thrown or knocked up there, like a piece of broken glass. Either way, the feet are off the floor and the thing is going somewhere fast. From that picture the word grows two ways. One way stays literal — animals in the air, people in planes. The other way keeps only the speed and lets go of the air, so a visit that lasts ten minutes is a flying visit.

Flying is fly plus -ing. The form is very old: Old English flēogende was the present participle of fly, meaning 'in the act of flying'. That is why the word still feels like an action even when it is used as a describing word in front of a noun.
