You can picture something screwed or nailed down: a shelf fixed to the wall, a seat fixed to the floor of a bus. It is there, and it stays there — you cannot slide it, lift it, or move it to a better spot. Everything else the word does grows from that one picture of something held in place, whether what is held is an object, a price, a person's opinion, or the look on someone's face.
