Not moving — standing still, staying in one place. You use it for something that could move but at this moment isn't: a stationary car at a red light, a stationary train, a stationary front on a weather map that just sits over the island and rains for three days. It is a bit more formal than "not moving" and turns up a lot in traffic reports, police language, science and instructions. There is a second, slightly different use: fixed in place by design, unable to move at all. A stationary bike is the exercise machine in the gym — you pedal hard and go nowhere. A stationary engine is one bolted to the ground rather than sitting in a vehicle. And a third, quieter use: numbers or a situation that is not changing. "House prices have remained stationary for two years" means they went neither up nor down. The trap with this word is not its meaning but its spelling, which I will come back to below.

From Latin stationarius, from statio, ultimately from stō 'to stand'.
源自拉丁文 stationarius，最早來自 stō「站立」。
組成來自拉丁文 stationarius「駐守一地的」，源頭是 statio「站崗的位置」，再往上就是 stō「站」。原本是指軍隊駐紮不動的部隊。
