Not moving — standing still, staying in one place. You use it for something that could move but at this moment isn't: a stationary car at a red light, a stationary train, a stationary front on a weather map that just sits over the island and rains for three days. It is a bit more formal than "not moving" and turns up a lot in traffic reports, police language, science and instructions.
Not moving不動, standing still, staying in one place靜止不動、待在原地. You use it你會用這個字 for something that could move but at this moment isn't來形容本來可以動、但此刻沒在動的東西: a stationary car at a red light像紅燈前停著的車、 a stationary train停著的火車、 a stationary front on a weather map that just sits over the island and rains for three days或天氣圖上停在島上不走、一連下三天雨的滯留鋒面. It它 is a bit more formal than「not moving」比「not moving」正式一點 and turns up a lot in而且常出現在 traffic reports, police language, science and instructions交通報導、警方用語、科學和說明文字裡
There is a second, slightly different use: fixed in place by design, unable to move at all. A stationary bike is the exercise machine in the gym — you pedal hard and go nowhere. A stationary engine is one bolted to the ground rather than sitting in a vehicle.
There is有 a second, slightly different use第二種、稍微不一樣的用法: fixed in place by design, unable to move at all指設計上就固定住、根本不能動. A stationary bikestationary bike(健身腳踏車) is the exercise machine in the gym就是健身房那種運動器材 you pedal hard and go nowhere你用力踩,但哪裡都不會去. A stationary enginestationary engine(固定式引擎) is one bolted to the ground就是螺栓固定在地上的引擎 rather than sitting in a vehicle而不是裝在車輛裡的
And a third, quieter use: numbers or a situation that is not changing. "House prices have remained stationary for two years" means they went neither up nor down.
And a third, quieter use還有第三種、比較不明顯的用法: numbers or a situation that is not changing指數字或狀況沒有在變化. 「House prices have remained stationary for two years」「House prices have remained stationary for two years」(房價兩年來都沒有變動) means they went neither up nor down意思是既沒漲也沒跌
