A favour is a good turn done for someone; favourable is the adjective for anything tilted in a person's or a plan's direction — a report that speaks well of you, a wind that blows the way you're sailing, terms that don't squeeze you. From Latin favor, 'goodwill, kindly regard', via Old French favorable. The whole word family keeps the idea of one side being looked on kindly.
